Portraits of a Healthy Masculinity
Harmful gender stereotypes and expectations not only limit the potential of girls and young women; they also prevent boys and men from fully developing their strengths, emotions, and identities. At Global Fund for Children, we are committed to advancing the rights of girls while also promoting healthy forms of masculinity grounded in empathy, care, respect, and responsibility. We believe that gender justice is essential for every girl and every boy to feel safe, valued, and confident enough to reach their full potential. We support community-based organizations working for the rights of girls and young people by addressing gender-based violence, harmful stereotypes, and traditional practices that perpetuate inequality. At the same time, we believe in the transformative power of boys and young men to express themselves fully and to play an active role in building “healthy masculinities”: challenging rigid models and promoting ways of being men that are more positive, supportive, and beneficial for everyone. This exhibition brings together a collection of portraits of young people participating in GFC partner programs in different regions of the world—from Nicaragua to Sierra Leone—focused on promoting healthy masculinities and the well-being of boys and young people. Through their voices and stories, we see that this work is a creative and ongoing process of liberation and personal growth.
