Care Academy for Journalists: Care Is News, Too

The Global Alliance for Care brings together journalists, organizations, and students for a global online gathering to reflect on how to bring stories of care into the public conversation.

What makes caregiving a story of public interest, and how can we tell it with accuracy, responsibility, and the ability to connect with diverse audiences?

Care is a necessity, a job, and a right. It sustains communities, the economy, and the well-being of our societies. However, its presence in the media remains limited, and stories about care are often told through stereotypes or confined to individual experiences, failing to connect with the gender inequalities, rights, and public responsibilities that underlie them.

With this question as a starting point, the Global Alliance for Care is organizing the Care Academy for Journalists, a gathering for learning and exchange in the context of the 2026 International Day of Care and Support.

More than a conventional panel, the Care Academy combines conversation and hands-on practice. First, journalists from different regions will present work that is transforming the way care is covered and will discuss the main narrative and journalistic challenges of this agenda, moderated by Equimundo. This session will be streamed live on Care Channel.

Next, a participatory workshop will bring together journalists, organizations, and students. The organizations will contribute experiences, data, knowledge, and sources, while journalism professionals and students will explore how these inputs can spark new questions, approaches, and potential stories—while always preserving editorial independence and judgment. The Alliance’s Technical Secretariat will facilitate the workshop.

What are the goals of the event?

To highlight journalistic work that is transforming the way care is covered; to explore approaches, formats, and editorial decisions that enable these stories to reach broad audiences; to reflect on who has a voice in stories about care and how to avoid stereotypical or paternalistic portrayals of caregivers and those who receive care and support; and to generate recommendations and practical tools for Alliance members.

Who is it for?

Journalists, editors, and media professionals; students of journalism, communication, and related disciplines; young or aspiring journalists; civil society organizations, social movements, and international organizations; Alliance members; and anyone interested in how caregiving is represented in the media.
